I am honoured to celebrate India's Independence Day on August 15th with the Republic of India and people of Indian descent not only here in British Columbia but all over the world.
India's Independence Day is a reminder of the values of freedom, the power of tolerance and the benefits of prosperity.
It has inspired people throughout the world to seek out justice and strive for equality through non-violent civil activism.
India remains the largest democracy in the world with one of the fastest growing economies.
Much like British Columbia, it is an example of how so many diverse cultures and traditions can co-exist to build a better, stronger and more inclusive future.
We remain committed to further strengthening our ties with India because we know that expanding and strengthening our relationship with India is mutually beneficial for both countries.
British Columbians of Indian heritage continue to play an important role in shaping our province.
Today is an opportunity for all British Columbians to recognize the significant contributions of the South Asian community to the history of B.C. as agricultural pioneers, industrial workers, entrepreneurial citizens and community leaders.
On behalf of all British Columbians, I would like to congratulate people of Indian descent in B.C. and all over the world for achieving independence, democracy and freedom at midnight on August 15 in 1947.
I wish you all a safe and joyous Independence Day!
