The Gathering Our Voices (GOV) conference (March 21-24, 2016) is a national Aboriginal youth conference bringing nearly 2,000 delegates to Victoria B.C.
Young people from around Canada – including chaperones, presenters and guests – are joining to explore, learn and to engage with their cultural peers. There have been opportunities to make new connections, rekindle old bonds, engage in passions and discover new things.
The youth were able to learn from the pillars of their community and hear their stories, their struggles and their triumphs, and then begin to forge their own way through a special blend of workshops, talent showcases and celebrations.
The Gathering Our Voices conference was hosted by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres and the Provincial Aboriginal Youth Council. Following the opening ceremonies, the Premier’s Awards for Aboriginal Excellence in Sport were presented.
On March 22nd, participants from the GOV conference flooded the front lawn of the Provincial Legislature for a 40-minute fitness exercise run by NikeN7 and the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council to inspire and enable Aboriginal youth to be physically active.
