A Burns Lake community forest group has been honoured by the Province for excellence in forest management and wildfire mitigation.

Cliff Manning of Guyishton Woodlot Ltd. is being recognized by the Province of B.C. with a Minister’s Award for Innovation and Excellence in Woodlot Management for the North Area.

With the help of a $1.25-million grant from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, the Cheslatta Carrier Nation is rehabilitating tree stands that were severely damaged by wildfires in 2018 and re-establishing productive forest ecosystems.

In response to the end of the mountain pine beetle epidemic and salvage of dead pine in the Lakes Timber Supply Area (TSA), the new allowable annual cut (AAC) for the Lakes TSA will be 970,000 cubic metres, effective immediately.

The BC Wildfire Service is burning slash piles in several areas within the Nadina Fire Zone to help prepare the sites for reforestation in the spring of 2018.

Smoke originating from large wildfires south of Vanderhoof and west of Quesnel has been visible in the Nadina Fire Zone and in areas around Burns Lake today. This smoke is expected to linger in the area for the next few days.
