A number of pedestrian and intersection improvements along Highway 16 in Houston soon will be underway to increase the safety along the highway, announced MLA for Nechako Lakes John Rustad, on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone.

Skilled trades students in five northwestern B.C. school districts will benefit from a three-year, $15-million investment by the B.C. government to support youth trades programs with the purchase of new trades training equipment.

Up to 16 British Columbians in Houston are receiving the training they need for jobs in their community, thanks to a federal-provincial partnership under the Canada-B.C. Job Fund Agreement.

School District 54 (Bulkley Valley) will receive $20,000 in funding for the Youth Work in Trades program to boost trades training for young people.

Northwest Community College (NWCC) will receive $150,000 to support training for workers affected by the partial closure and decreased production at the Huckleberry Mine. The funding is also expected to provide additional training opportunities for students in other communities in the Northwest including workers affected by the closure of the Canfisco cannery.

The public may see increased smoke and flame activity on the China Nose Fire this afternoon associated with a planned controlled burn-off to establish solid containment lines.

The China Nose fire experienced minimal growth last night, but the fire is still uncontrolled and weather conditions remain conducive to extreme fire behaviour.
