The B.C. government has committed more than $45,000 for a new partnership project with manufacturers in the province’s North Central region to help identify their labour needs.

School District 57 will receive $30,000 in funding for the Youth Work in Trades program to boost trades training for young people.

Young people of Prince George will be able to discover the skills they will need for tomorrow’s in-demand occupations, and engage in a direct dialogue with local employers and post-secondary schools about upcoming career opportunities.

To ensure that the forest industry has the skilled workforce it needs in the future, the Province has partnered with the B.C. Forest Safety Council (BCFSC) and the Council of Forest Industries (COFI) on two new Forest Workforce projects that will support the recruitment, identification and skills assessment of qualified workers.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the annual federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) ministers of labour meeting is being held in the city of Prince George. The meeting will be co-chaired by Canada’s Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour MaryAnn Mihychuk, and Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour Shirley Bond.

Trades students at the College of New Caledonia (CNC) will benefit from provincial funding of $4.3 million for skills training in high-priority trades seats.

The governments of Canada and British Columbia announced that a total of $7 million will be available under the Canada-BC Job Grant to help businesses provide their current or new employees with skills training.
