The Government of B.C. is taking the first step toward ensuring that more B.C. logs are processed in B.C., creating jobs for British Columbians by applying a new, targeted fee-in-lieu of manufacturing for exported logs harvested from a coastal BC Timber Sales licence.

Several new wildfires started in the Northwest Fire Centre over the weekend, due to lightning storms that have been moving through the region.  

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to several wildfires following successive lightning strikes across the Northwest Fire Centre.

Unseasonably warm and dry conditions in parts of the province this spring have resulted in higher fire danger ratings in some areas, so British Columbians are urged to exercise caution with any allowed fire use over the Canada Day long weekend.

A band of lightning that moved through the Northwest Fire Centre the afternoon of Wednesday, June 26, started several new wildfires in the region.

As part of wildfire recovery efforts following the 2018 Shovel Lake and Island Lake wildfires, the Province is working with local First Nations to protect and restore burnt areas and support the First Nations, as they monitor the season’s mushroom harvest.

Category 2 open burning will be allowed again throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre’s jurisdiction, effective at noon on June 26, 2019.

The Province is closing recreational angling in Lost Lake to prevent the spread of goldfish, a non-native species.

Government is implementing an interim moratorium on new resource development in parts of northeastern British Columbia, while providing more time to protect jobs and support workers as it engages with affected communities and industries on long-term caribou protection strategies.

Comments are being accepted until Aug. 23, 2019, on proposed resource objectives for Pipi7iyekw, an old-growth forest and sensitive area located in the shared territory of Lil’wat and St’at’imc Nations, in the Cascades Natural Resource District.
