In British Columbia, there is a shared commitment to ensure that the province is a place where the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples are recognized, and Indigenous Peoples can thrive.

The shíshálh Nation will be better reflected in provincial legislation after the passage of legislative amendments to recognize traditional and legal shíshálh names in existing provincial acts.

Nathan Cullen, Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship; Murray Rankin, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation; and lhe hiwus (Chief) Lenora Joe, shíshálh Nation (shíshálh), have released the following joint statement:

The Tla’amin Nation and the Province have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) committing to work together on a future for tiskʷat that furthers economic reconciliation and environmental stewardship in the region.

The shíshálh Nation and the Province of British Columbia have committed to negotiate a decision-making agreement under Section 7 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

The Province has returned almost 100 hectares (247 acres) of Crown land called kwentan makw'ali to the shíshálh Nation.

Areas in the Sunshine Coast are undergoing name changes to reflect the language, culture and heritage of local Indigenous peoples.

Ongoing efforts to make health-care systems culturally safe and accessible for all First Nations Peoples, Inuit and Métis peoples in B.C. and across Canada are being strengthened with the creation of a ground-breaking repository of resources at the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH).

The Government of B.C. is supporting the shíshálh Nation’s plans to build and operate new culturally appropriate housing for their members, with a particular focus on Elders, women and children, and others in need of affordable housing in their community.  

The Province has transferred three parcels of Crown land to shíshálh Nation.
