Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has released the following statement regarding Surrey’s transition to the Surrey Police Service (SPS):

The Province is taking action against hate-motivated violence in British Columbia by supporting community organizations throughout the province and by providing resources to individuals.

To help people in crisis and to free police to focus on crime, a new crisis response team is now in Burnaby.

The Province is updating the Police Act to clarify the process any municipality must follow when they wish to change their Police of Jurisdiction, actioning the government's commitment to remove uncertainty, enhance public confidence and keep people safe throughout British Columbia.

Stable funding for sexual assault programs, as well as the establishment of new policing standards for responding to sexual assaults, will respect and support the diverse needs of survivors and ensure more effective investigations.

The Province is securing safety and providing certainty for people in Surrey and throughout British Columbia by directing the City of Surrey to move forward with the Surrey Police Service.
