British Columbia plans to introduce a series of improvements to help the taxi industry modernize and remain competitive in anticipation of ride-sharing services coming to British Columbia by the holiday season at the end of 2017.

A $7.3-million contract has been awarded to Knappett Industries of Nanaimo to finish work on the new route that will provide an improved connection between Highway 19 and the community of Courtenay. 

Burns Lake, Prince George, and Smithers will soon receive new inter-community transit service, which is made possible through the B.C. government’s $5-million Highway 16 Transportation Action Plan.

Road improvements totalling $9 million will get underway this spring in B.C. that will result in safer conditions in the Cariboo communities of Quesnel, Barkerville and surrounding areas.

A $2.33-million contract has been awarded to Brocor Construction Ltd. of Dawson Creek for a project to upgrade the intersection at Highway 97 and Montney Highway (Road 254), announced MLA for Peace River South Mike Bernier on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone.

The British Columbia government outlined a new safety improvement plan for the Sea to Sky Highway through the community of Lions Bay, which includes the installation of 1.4 kilometres of concrete median barrier.

The construction tender to extend the northbound bus lane along Douglas Street to Saanich Road has been posted on BC Bid. Work is anticipated to start this spring.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is starting work this week on a $2-million Highway 7 median barrier project for Maple Ridge.
