2023 Year in Review
Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development and Non-Profits Megan Dykeman
Focus of my first year
- Advocating for non-profits across government
- Strengthening connections with non-profits
- Enhancing communication with the sector
- Helping the sector overcome challenges
- Championing the work of non-profits
Non-profit stats
B.C. has more than 31,000 non-profit organizations:- employing 335,000 people
- contributing $28 billion to the Province’s economy
- women make up 74% of non-profit employees
What I heard
This year, I had the opportunity to meet and hear from non-profits small and large during one-on-one meetings, engagements and roundtables. Here is what I heard from you:
- Many non-profit organizations are experiencing capacity challenges
- Funding needs to be flexible and reliable
- The role non-profits play in delivering essential services is undervalued
Our support
The provincial government heard you, and that’s why this year we funded over $110 million to support non-profits. Through the $60 million Stronger Community Services Fund, we are supporting multi-year funding to:- BIPOC organizations advancing racial equity and racial justice
- Community foundations across B.C.
- Small, non-profit organizations across BC
- Large, multi-service organizations supporting poverty reduction
Food security roundtable
In a roundtable this fall, I heard from 17 food access organizations serving the Fraser Valley. These conversations provided valuable insights to inform government’s ongoing work to ensure people have access to nutritious food locally.Main themes discussed to better understand local food security:
- Improving Access to Nutritious and Culturally Safe Food
- Expanding Infrastructure and Transportation Capacity
- Enhancing Collaboration and Information Sharing
- Securing Reliable Multi-Year Funding
