Columbia River Treaty

U.S. Working Draft Recommendations Released

The U.S. Entity has released a working draft of recommendations that reflect the perspectives of the U.S. Columbia River Treaty Sovereign Review Team. These draft recommendations are intended to provide a basis for further regional discussion in the U.S. In September, another set of draft recommendations will be released for stakeholder and public comment. In December 2013 final recommendations will be made to the U.S. Department of State.

The U.S. draft recommendations include an extensive list of Treaty-related and domestic interests that are not necessarily shared by all members of the US Sovereign Review Team. The working draft recommendations cover a suite of topics including ecosystem-based function, hydropower, flood risk management, water supply, navigation, recreation and climate change. It’s important to note that these are draft recommendations of U.S. interests only and are not balanced by consideration of B.C. interests.
