To ensure a consistent standard of qualification for all officials in professional contests such as mixed martial arts, boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai kickboxing, the B.C. government is putting in place the first of a series of training courses.
Professional boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts and other similar sports are popular but they need a consistent regulatory framework to help ensure the safety of the athletes and officials.
Announced in May 2012, a Provincial Athletic Commissioner would license athletes, promoters and officials. The commissioner would oversee athletic contests and ensure all combat sport events conform to provincial rules.
The B.C. government is currently developing the regulatory framework and setting in place licensing and permitting rules. The training course provides certification as an MMA judge - one of the requirements to become an official with the Provincial Athletic Commission.
The training course will be offered through C.O.M.M.A.N.D. (Certification of Officials for Mixed Martial Arts National Development), with instructors John McCarthy and Jerin Valel. For further information, please go to: http://www.cscd.gov.bc.ca/sport/programs/athletic_commission.htm
