Minister of Health Terry Lake issued the following statement today:
"Last September, our government gave clear and specific direction that wages for all managers and executives across the public sector were to be frozen. The decision to freeze salaries for management employees was made to address a clear revenue shortfall and keep spending under control - with the best interests of taxpayers in mind.
"This decision was clearly communicated throughout the health-care system.
"I was made aware that salary increases for management employees at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) were made without the consent or knowledge of the PHSA board of directors. The board stated today that it is reviewing its legal options for addressing the increases, which were not in compliance with government wage policy. All heath authorities have been reminded that there cannot be any variance from the policy in place.
"As Minister of Health, I was disappointed to learn that the wage policy of government was not followed.
"I support the board's actions to respond to this matter, and I am pleased the board chair and members of the board of directors are acting to address this situation.
"The provincial government entrusts health authorities with the delivery of quality health care to British Columbians and expects budgetary direction to be followed. It is important for all British Columbians to have confidence that the finite health dollars we have available during these difficult economic times are directed where they belong - into front-line care."
