Today Health Minister Terry Lake issued the following statement on the provincial proclamation of Sports Day in Canada:
"Sports Day in Canada is an opportunity for all British Columbians to celebrate the power of sport, build stronger communities and facilitate healthy active living.
"Through the Healthy Families BC strategy, our government is developing new partnerships with communities, schools and employers to support people in making healthier choices through programs that aim to reduce tobacco use, increase opportunities for physical activity, support healthy eating and promote healthy weights.
"We are committed to making the healthy choice the easier choice for British Columbians. British Columbia was the first jurisdiction to partner with ParticipACTION, investing $6 million to help increase physical activity levels throughout our province. This partnership will build on British Columbia's reputation as a leader in healthy living.
"B.C. is well known throughout the world for its easy access to some of the best outdoor and indoor activity space. After successfully hosting world class events like the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, B.C. will soon host the upcoming 2014 Tim Hortons Brier Canadian men's curling championship, 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, 2015 Canada Winter Games and the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
"We know that leading an active lifestyle has many health benefits for the entire family. By officially proclaiming Nov. 30, 2013, as Sports Day in Canada here in B.C., we encourage all British Columbians to explore how sports can help us lead healthier lives."
