Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens' Services Andrew Wilkinson welcomes conference delegates, speakers, sponsors, organizers and volunteers to the Privacy and Access 20/20 Conference:

"I would like to welcome everyone who has travelled from across Canada and around the world this week to attend the Privacy and Access 20/20 Conference hosted by B.C's information and privacy commissioner Elizabeth Denham.

"This conference presents a great opportunity to listen, voice new ideas and consider how privacy and access are managed in the future.

"The government of B.C. understands that times have changed from 20 years ago - when B.C.'s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act was first introduced.

"Since then, technology - in particular the Internet - has brought a shift in how citizens, governments and businesses think about information rights.

"As the saying goes, the one constant we are all faced with is change; as technology continues to evolve, it will continue to present new challenges and opportunities for all of us.

"We recognize we must take action to build a new vision for information rights that helps us address these challenges, while ensuring we protect the core values of access to information and privacy protection.

"As a government we are committed to ensuring that the privacy of individual citizens is protected by legislation that is among the strongest of its kind in Canada.

"We will also continue to work to ensure government is open and transparent for citizens, while taking on the challenge of managing ever increasing volumes of information - all in a manner that is respectful to taxpayer dollars.

"I expect this conference will provide all those attending with an opportunity to listen to and participate in meaningful, thought-provoking discussions on topics many are so passionate about.

"Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to the success of this conference!"
