The 82-year-old Spences Bridge over the Thompson River between Highway 8 and the community of Spences Bridge will be closed permanently as of Jan. 1, 2014.

Following a recent detailed inspection, engineers have determined the Old Spences Bridge is not dependable for use beyond the end of this year. This review confirms that the bridge is in poor condition overall, with key structural components at the end of their operational life.

The new Spences Bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway, 900 metres from the old bridge, provides a safe crossing for highway users and the community. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is in consultation with local residents, seeking input on opportunities to improve the trip via the new Spences Bridge for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
