Today, Health Minister Terry Lake and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health for Healthy Living Michelle Stilwell issued the following statement to recognize the power of sport in British Columbia:

“We join together for Jersey Day on November 28 and RBC Sports Day in Canada on November 29 to take part in sports and celebrate active lifestyles. With events occurring in communities, throughout B.C., these two days mark a great opportunity for all British Columbians to celebrate the power of sport with their families, build stronger communities and commit to leading active, healthier lives.

“We are helping to make the healthy choice the easier choice for British Columbians. Our province was the first jurisdiction to partner with ParticipACTION, investing $6 million to help increase physical activity levels throughout our province, and build on British Columbia’s reputation as a leader in healthy living.

“Through Healthy Families BC, government’s health promotion strategy, we are developing new partnerships with communities, schools and employers to support families in making healthier choices through programs that aim to reduce tobacco use, increase opportunities for physical activity, support healthy eating and promote healthy weights.

“We know that leading an active lifestyle has many health benefits for the entire family. We encourage all British Columbians to explore how sports can help them lead healthier lives.”

“That is why British Columbia is honoured to host the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, from February 13 - March 1, 2015. We are renowned as a world-class sporting province, offering opportunities for competitive sports on a local, national and international level. Prince George and northern British Columbia will see up to 2,400 athletes, 1,000 coaches and officials, 4,500 volunteers, hundreds of media and thousands of visitors.

“This event will be the largest multi-sport and cultural event to ever be held in Prince George and northern British Columbia, building champions and inspiring dreams amongst Canadian youth.”
