Significantly more information about B.C.’s legislation is now free and open to the public with the expansion of the BC Laws website on Wednesday, April 2.

The information and services previously available by subscription through QP Legaleze will be incorporated into the BC Laws website over the next several months. This change will provide savings for businesses and members of the public doing legal research online.

The change allows anyone to access legislation, regulations and other related information online - information that previously was only available by paid subscription. Changes include improved search functionality along with a new, open licence that allows personal and commercial use of the resources on the website. In addition to these changes, BC Laws also will provide access to:

  • Full-text orders-in-council documents from the year 1872 to present.
  • A table of legislative changes and point-in-time legislative documents allowing users to see how the documents have changed over time.

Adding an open licence and electronic access allows people to pull legislative data and information directly from BC Laws. This change opens opportunities for the development of applications such as mobile smartphone apps, or custom online databases of laws and regulations in a specific area (e.g., environmental laws).
