Let the construction begin. Shovels, meet dirt. Students, get ready to meet a new addition to Adams Road Elementary.
Education Minister and Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Peter Fassbender, Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Stephanie Cadieux and Surrey board of education chair Shawn Wilson were joined by students, staff and the community today to break ground on the 10-classroom addition that will provide 40 new kindergarten-student spaces and 200 new elementary-student spaces.
The new addition will increase the school’s total capacity from 290 to 530.
The addition will be two storeys high and have eight elementary-school classrooms in addition to a central space so teachers and students can work together. Using the same architectural design as the school, large windows will provide natural light to the second-storey classroom and project area. Two kindergarten classrooms will be located on the main floor.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer and is expected to be complete by August 2016.
The Adams Road Elementary addition is one of three new elementary school additions recently announced for the Surrey school district.

“Adams Road Elementary will soon provide more classroom space for our community’s youngest learners. This addition represents a commitment from government and the school district to support growing student enrolment and B.C. families.”
Shawn Wilson, Surrey board of education chair -
“Trustees are glad for more progress in addressing our district’s significant growth challenges and we know the Adams Road school community is thrilled construction is getting underway. Our board thanks the Adams Road students, staff and parents for their patience, as well as the school communities of Morgan and Rosemary Heights elementary schools.”
Quick Facts:
- In August 2014, government announced the additions to Adams Road Elementary, Morgan Elementary and Rosemary Heights at a cost of $9.4 million, and support for the $55.2 million Clayton North Secondary.
- The Surrey board of education is contributing $19 million — about 30% — of the total construction costs for the new secondary school and three elementary school expansions. The funding comes from the school district’s local funds ($4.6 million) and restricted capital account ($14.4 million), which include proceeds from the sale of district properties; including most recently, the old Sunnyside Elementary school.
- Since 2001, government has invested more than $335 million for 49 capital and seismic projects, as well as 12 site acquisitions in Surrey.
