Improvement projects for schools

The Government of B.C. has awarded more than $35 million worth of improvement projects to schools throughout the province, as part of the Province's Routine Capital Program.

School districts were asked to identify priorities for routine capital upgrade projects to support healthy, efficient schools for students, teachers and staff. Eligible projects had to cost more than $100,000 and included:

  • Electrical upgrades (power supply and distribution systems);
  • Energy upgrades;
  • Health and safety upgrades (traffic safety, indoor air quality);
  • Mechanical upgrades (heating, ventilation, plumbing); and
  • Roofing upgrades.

The projects include:

SD5 - Southeast Kootenay

  • Laurie Middle School (Cranbrook) - $434,950 for roof and hydronic heat improvements
  • Mt Baker Secondary School (Cranbrook) - $368,000 to install two boilers and upgrade circulation pumps
  • Pinewood Elementary School /Amy Woodland Elementary School /Steeples Elementary School - (Cranbrook) $143,800 to install gas fired air handling, furnace, heat pumps

SD6 - Rocky Mountain

  • Golden Secondary School (Golden) - $220,900 to upgrade wood shop sawdust extractor
  • Golden Secondary School (Golden) - $840,000 to replace the roof
  • David Thompson Secondary School (Invermere) - $115,000 to replace digital direct control panel
  • David Thompson Secondary School (Invermere) - $134,300 install a larger saw dust collection unit

SD8 - Kootenay Lake

  • W.E. Graham Community School (Nelson) - $120,000 to upgrade the boiler 
  • Hume Elementary School (Nelson) - $142,000 to upgrade the boiler
  • LV Rogers School (Nelson) - $264,000 to upgrade the boiler

SD10 - Arrow Lakes

  • LESS (Lucerne Elementary-Secondary School) (New Denver) - $339,000 to upgrade the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system
  • Nakusp Elementary School (Nakusp) - $245,400 upgrade lighting with high efficiency LED lighting 

SD19 - Revelstoke

  • Arrow Heights Elementary School (Revelstoke) - $900,000 Phase 1:  mechanical upgrade

SD20 - Kootenay-Columbia

  • Kootenay-Columbia Learning School (Trail) - $405,000 to upgrade the boiler

SD22 - Vernon

  • W. L. Seaton Secondary School (Vernon) - $1,029,500 to replace the roof
  • Beairsto Elementary School (Vernon) - $192,000 for new transformer, cabling and switchboard
  • W. L. Seaton Secondary School (Vernon) - $264,000 for a new transformer power pole, service cabling and switchboard
  • Okanagan Landing Elementary School (Vernon) - $600,000 Phase 1: geothermal ground systems and central systems installation

SD23 - Central Okanagan

  • AS Matheson Elementary School (Kelowna) - $683,000 for roof replacement and upgrade
  • Springvalley Middle School (Kelowna) - $160,800 to replace sawdust collection system
  • Glenmore Elementary School (Kelowna) - $232,000 for electrical system direct digital controller installation

SD28 - Quesnel

  • Correlieu Secondary School (Quesnel) - $490,000 for heating ventilation and air conditioning upgrade

SD33 - Chilliwack

  • Tyson Elementary School (Chilliwack) - $186,000 to upgrade the mechanical system
  • AD Rundle Middle School (Chilliwack) - $710,000 to upgrade the mechanical system
  • Vedder Middle School (Chilliwack) - $444,000 to replace existing roof top units with roof top heat pumps

SD34 - Abbotsford

  • Blue Jay Elementary School (Abbotsford) - $168,000 to replace the condensing unit and domestic hot water tank
  • Centennial Park Elementary School (Abbotsford) - $567,600 to upgrade roof
  • W.J. Mouat Secondary School (Abbotsford) - $348,000 to upgrade heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system

SD35 - Langley

  • Betty Gilbert Middle School, H D Stafford Middle School, D W Poppy Secondary School, Brookswood Secondary School and R E Mountain Secondary School (Langley) - $126,350 for lighting upgrades
  • Langley Fine Arts Elementary-Secondary School (Fort Langley) - $149,500 to improve lighting efficiency

SD36 - Surrey

  • Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School (Surrey) - $80,000 Phase 1: design and tender preperation for boiler replacement
  • Portable Classrooms (Surrey) - $560,000 to upgrade portables and mechanical system
  • Portable Classrooms (Surrey) - $330,000 for roof improvements and repairs
    Portable Classrooms (Surrey) - $300,000 for exterior repairs

SD37 - Delta

  • South Delta Secondary School (Delta) - $159,500 to replace transformer and related switchgear

SD38 - Richmond

  • Robert J. Tait Elementary School (Richmond) - $665,000 to upgrade roof
  • General Currie Elementary School (Richmond) - $193,500 to replace boiler
  • Robert Alexander McMath Secondary School (Richmond) - $139,700 to replace boiler

SD40 - New Westminster

  • Lord Kelvin Elementary School (New Westminster) - $140,000 to upgrade lighting
  • Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School (New Westminster) - $170,000 to complete lighting upgrade

SD41 - Burnaby

  • Aubrey Elementary School (Burnaby) - $205,800 Phase 1: design and tender preparation and materials acquisition for installation of new ventilators and direct digital control system
  • Stride Avenue Community School (Burnaby) - $315,000 Phase 1: design and tender prep and materials acquisition of boilers and ventilation units

SD42 - Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows

  • Albion Elementary School (Maple Ridge) - $216,000 to upgrade central boiler plant and domestic hot water system
  • Fairview Elementary School (Maple Ridge) - $216,000 to central boiler plant and domestic hot water system upgrade
  • Westview Secondary School (Maple Ridge) - $414,000 Phase 1: purchase roof top heat pumps with gas fired backup heating

SD43 - Coquitlam

  • Anmore Elementary School (Anmore) - $220,000 to upgrade power generator
  • Gleneagle Secondary School (Coquitlam) - $498,000 improve heating/ventilation system

SD44 - North Vancouver

  • Cleveland Elementary School (North Vancouver) $573,198 to replace windows

SD45 - West Vancouver

  • Ecole Cedardale Elementary School (West Vancouver) - $206,300 install accessible elevator
  • Caulfeild Elementary School (West Vancouver) - $131,000 Phase 1 – acquire new HVAC unit and components for gymnasium and classrooms for future installation
  • Cypress Park Primary School (West Vancouver) - $400,000 to replace boiler plant, replace classroom ventilation system and install digital direct control controls

SD46 - Sunshine Coast

  • Madeira Park Elementary School (Madeira Park) - $453,750 to replace boiler plant

  • James Thomson Elementary School (Powell River) - $211,750 to upgrade electrical system

SD48 - Sea to Sky

  • Howe Sound Secondary School and Squamish Montessori Elementary School (Howe Sound) - $436,000 install a common biomass plant located between two schools and extend life of existing boilers

SD49 - Central Coast

  • Shearwater Elementary School (Hagensborg) - $375,000 preliminary work to replace water system

SD51 - Boundary

  • Grand Forks Secondary School (Grand Forks) $220,000 improve sawdust collection system
  • Boundary Central Secondary School (Grand Forks) $208,000 install larger saw dust collection system for wood working shop

SD52 -Prince Rupert

  • Charles Hayes Secondary School (Prince Rupert) - $458,000 to install high-speed, peer-to-peer network of digital direct control controllers and engineered lighting control center and software

SD53 - Okanagan Similkameen

  • Oliver Elementary School (Oliver) - $140,000 to replace remaining sections of roof
  • Similkameen Elementary Secondary School (Keremeos) - $436,000 for building envelope improvements
  • Osoyoos Secondary School (Osoyoos) - $271,000 install larger sawdust collection system and ducting improvements

SD54 - Bulkey-Valley

  • Telkwa Elementary School, Silverthorne Elementary School (Telkwa and Houston) - $398,200 upgrade mechanical system controls

SD57 - Prince George

  • Polaris Montessori Elementary School (Prince George) - $100,000 to upgrade fire protection system upgrade
  • Polaris Montessori Elementary School (Prince George) - $130,000 to upgrade gymnasium heating and ventilation unit

SD58 - Nicola-Similkameen

  • Diamond Vale Elementary School (Merritt) - $250,000 to replace the boiler
  • Collettville Elementary School (Merritt) - $225,000 to replace boiler

SD59 - Peace River South

  • Dawson Creek Secondary School (Dawson Creek) - $282,500 to replace sawdust collection system
  • Tumbler Ridge Secondary School (Tumbler Ridge) - $236,000 to replace sawdust collection system
  • Chetwynd Secondary School (Chetwynd) - $206,000 to replace sawdust collection system
  • McLeod Elementary-Secondary School (Groundbirch) - $94,000 upgrade HVAC controls

  • Robert Ogilvie Elementary School (Fort St. John) - $781,250 to replace furnaces with new boiler plant and install classroom unit ventilators with CO2 control

SD61 - Greater Victoria

  • Cloverdale Traditional Elementary School (Victoria) - $105,000 to construct student drop-off area

SD62 - Sooke

  • Journey Middle School (Sooke) - $299,000 to replace boiler
  • Sooke Elementary School (Sooke)-  $209,000 to replace boiler

SD63 - Saanich

  • Prospect Lake Elementary School (Victoria) – $175,000 to replace aging boilers, furnace with new high efficiency boilers pumps, valves, direct digital control panel and hot water heater.

SD67 - Okanagan-Skaha

  • Princess Margaret Secondary School (Penticton) - $190,600 to replace dust collector
  • Summerland Middle School (Summerland) - $219,300 install larger saw dust collection system for wood working shop

SD68 - Nanaimo-Ladysmith

  • Georgia Avenue Elementary School (Nanaimo) - $360,000 for boiler upgrade
  • Quarterway Elementary School (Nanaimo) - $302,500 for boiler upgrade

  • Norkam Secondary School (Kamloops) - $233,700 for replacement of all interior wiring, receptacles, and electrical panels
  • Summit Elementary School (Kamloops) - $225,000 for boiler system upgrade
  • Valleyview Secondary School (Kamloops) - $304,800 for lighting retrofit upgrade to LED
  • Brocklehurst Middle School (Kamloops) - $355,600 for lighting retrofit upgrade to LED

SD74 - Gold Trail

  • Kumsheen Elementary-Secondary School (Lytton) - $836,520 for upgrades to change rooms and washrooms
  • Lillooet Secondary School (Lillooet) - $177,700 for improvements to the woodshop local exhaust system

SD75 - Mission

  • Silverdale Elementary School (Mission) - $210,000 for replacement of the boiler plant, the domestic hot water system and three package Roof Top Units
  • Hatzic Middle School and Heritage Park Middle Schools - $433,600 for upgrades to heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
  • Hatzic Middle School - $330,000 - Phase 1: pre-purchase of boilers, racking and heating water distribution pumps

SD78 - Fraser Cascade

  • Silver Creek Elementary School (Hope) - $160,000 for completing lighting efficiency upgrades
  • Kent Elementary School (Agassiz) - $1,300,000 for mechanical upgrades

SD79 - Cowichan

  • Palsson Elementary School (Lake Cowichan) - $200,000 for Phase 1: upgrades to envelope efficiency

SD81 - Fort Nelson

  • Fort Nelson Secondary School (Fort Nelson) - $912,000 for replacing the roof

SD82 - Coast Mountains

  • Caledonia Secondary School (Terrace) - $256,400 for replacing the sawdust collection system to meet current codes and standards
  • Thornhill Elementary  School (Terrace) - $375,000 for Phase 1: boiler replacement
  • New Hazelton Elementary School (New Hazelton) - $375,000 for boiler replacement

SD83 - North Okanagan-Shuswap

  • Hillcrest Elementary School (Salmon Arm) - $505,000 for ground thermal field improvements
  • Pleasant Valley Secondary School (Armstrong) - $140,000 for electrical system direct digital control replacement

SD85 - Vancouver Island North

  • North Island Secondary School (Port McNeil) - $393,250 for replacing existing shop and gymnasium air handling units and exhaust systems

SD91 - Nechako Lakes

  • Fort St. James Secondary School (Fort St. James) - $92,400 Phase 2: solar wall: harvesting pre-heated air for other HVAC applications throughout building
