British Columbia is proud to recognize Nov. 1-7, 2015, as National Technology Week.

Government is encouraging everyone to celebrate the important role technology plays in our lives, economy and the future of B.C.

British Columbia has one of the most-vibrant technology sectors in Canada, providing 86,000 jobs in over 9,300 established companies throughout the province. B.C.’s technology sector generates over $9.5 billion in revenue every year. Technology will continue to be a focus for government, including the #BCTECH Summit in January 2016.

We rely on technology in every area of our lives, to warm and light our homes, transport us from place to place, help heal our bodies and entertain our minds. Technology is a major driver of the global economy, helping to improve the quality of life for people around the world.

Today, families, friends and communities can reach around the globe to connect, learn and share in ways that would have been impossible without today’s computers, smart devices and satellite technology.

Our health and quality of life continues to improve thanks to technology. Over the last 50 years, new therapies, genomics, devices and drugs have transformed health care. These advancements are thanks to the work of the scientists, engineers and researchers who create the breakthroughs we rely on.

Thanks to clean technologies, the natural resource sector can develop British Columbia’s natural wealth while minimizing the impact to the environment. B.C. has developed desalinization technology is helping to bring fresh water to people around the globe, and B.C.-designed drones are helping crews put out forest fires faster than ever before by identifying trouble spots and directing resources.

This week, as you call a loved one on your computer, watch live video from halfway around the world, marvel at the latest 3D technology on display at your local cinema or drive your car, think about the amazing work that went into the technology to make it all possible, and how B.C. will be a leader in creating the next breakthroughs of the 21st century.

• Over 94% of British Columbians have access to high-speed Internet service, and the B.C. government is committed to 100% access by 2021.
