More than three million BC Services Cards have now been issued, giving the majority of British Columbians a secure government identity card designed to make it easier to access government services, while protecting personal information and helping to reduce fraud and risk of identity theft.
The BC Services Card has replaced the CareCard and can be used to prove identity when seeking services at health and non-health points of service. The BC Services Card can be combined with a driver’s licence for ease of use.
The BC Services Card includes a chip, similar to a debit or credit card. The chip does not store any personal information. However, in the future it will enable British Columbians to securely access a wide range of provincial government services in person, online and on mobile devices.
Getting a BC Services Card is simple. When renewing a driver’s licence or BC Identification Card at an ICBC driver licensing office, you can renew your enrolment in the Medical Services Plan and get a BC Services Card at the same time.
If you don’t have a driver’s licence or identification card, you can also get a BC Services Card at an ICBC driver licensing office.
By February 2018, eligible adult B.C. residents need to renew enrolment in Medical Services Plan and replace their CareCard with a BC Services Card.
