The BC Coroners Service has announced that a public inquest will be held into the death of Christopher Robert Roy.
The inquest is scheduled to take place beginning July 18, 2016, at the Coroners Courtroom in Burnaby.
Mr. Roy, aged 37, was an inmate at Matsqui Institution, a federal prison. He was being held in the segregation unit. On the morning of June 1, 2015, Mr. Roy was found hanging from a ligature in his cell and was transported to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He died in hospital on June 3, 2015.
Presiding coroner Brynne Redford and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.
An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
