The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died in a skiing incident near Haines Junction on April 20, 2016.
He is Maxim Arsenault, aged 36, of Whistler.
Mr. Arsenault was one of a party of friends who had travelled to a remote area near the Pleasant Camp Recreation Site near Haines Junction near the B.C.-Yukon border to go backcountry skiing. In the morning they snowmobiled to the area where they began skiing. Mr. Arsenault was seen by the others to be skiing down a narrow trail and then was swept over a steep embankment.
Other members of the party were able to locate Mr. Arsenault shortly afterward and dig him out, but they were unable to resuscitate him.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.
The family of Mr. Arsenault has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
