The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a woman who died in Burns Lake following an incident with a train on Oct. 8, 2016.
She was Margaret Alice West, aged 44, of Burns Lake.
Shortly after noon on Oct. 8, 2016, Ms. West and two companions were on foot, crossing the railway tracks near the intersection of Highway 16 and Francois Lake Road in Burns Lake. A VIA passenger train was proceeding westbound to Prince Rupert on the track. The companions were able to get off the tracks before the train came, but Ms. West was not able to do so, and was struck by the engine. She was deceased at the scene.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.
Ms. West’s family has been notified of her death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service requests that the media respect their privacy during this difficult time.
