The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of the second of two teenagers who died as the result of a motor vehicle incident in Nanaimo on Oct. 21, 2016.
He was Humberto Alonso Robles, aged 16, a resident of Mexico City who was living temporarily in Nanaimo as an exchange student.
Mr. Robles and another exchange student, Maria Hildebrandt Cereija, aged 15, were crossing the Island Highway eastbound at Mostar Road in Nanaimo about 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, 2016 when they were struck by an SUV. Mr. Robles was immediately transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and then transferred to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for further treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 24, 2016.
Ms. Hildebrandt Cereija had been transferred to Victoria General Hospital for treatment, but she also succumbed to her injuries on Oct. 24, 2016.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate these deaths.
