Construction to improve safety and the flow of traffic at two key intersections on the Nanaimo Parkway has now been completed, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone announced today.
“This announcement highlights our commitment to improve intersection safety in communities across British Columbia,” Stone said. “The completion of the Nanaimo Parkway dual left-turn project makes good on one of our first intersection improvement priorities announced last year through B.C. on the Move.”
The new left-turn lanes at Jinglepot/Mostar and Jinglepot/Third Street are in addition to existing left-turn lanes on Highway 19. These new lanes can now better accommodate the high volume of traffic that turns southbound off the highway. With these changes on Highway 19, the side streets also now have additional lanes to receive the left-turning traffic onto Mostar and Jingle Pot roads, respectively. As well, the lighting at these intersections and at Northfield and Fifth Street was upgraded to LED standards, which will further increase safety for all drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
“These improvements bring a welcome relief to commuters travelling in and out of Nanaimo,” said Michelle Stilwell, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum. “The upgrades, which are along the backbone of Vancouver Island’s main corridor, also ensure a safe and enjoyable commute for residents and visitors.”
This construction is part of the $193-million-plus investment the Province and its partners have committed toward transportation projects on Vancouver Island since last spring.
