The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is starting work soon on a $3-million resurfacing project for a 10-kilometre stretch of Chilliwack Lake Road.
“As a part of B.C. on the Move, keeping our provincial highways and side roads in top condition is a priority for our ministry,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone. “This section of Chilliwack Lake Road has experienced some deterioration, and resurfacing is necessary to make the drive safer and smoother for all motorists.”
Okanagan Aggregate Ltd. is the contractor for this project, which will resurface 10 km of the two-lane road between Forestry Bridge and Slesse Bridge. The asphalt will be repaved, the shoulders of the road will be re-graded and crews will put down new road markings. In addition, the concrete road-side barriers will be repaired and replaced as necessary.
“Chilliwack Lake Road stretches through a beautiful part of the Fraser Valley and sees steady use from industry, residents and outdoorspeople alike, which causes significant wear over time,” said Laurie Throness, MLA for Chilliwack-Hope. “I’m proud of our government’s commitment to the safety and comfort of our residents and visitors on the road and I’m glad to see this project get underway.”
The contractor is expected to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. During construction, single-lane alternating traffic will be in effect for vehicles traveling through the construction zone. Project signs have been set up at both ends of the construction zone for public information. Motorists are advised to check Drivebc.ca for more information if travelling through this area. Construction work is expected to be complete in October.
Chilliwack Lake Road is located south of the City of Chilliwack and stretches to 40 km between Vedder Road and Chilliwack Lake. The road is used by forest industry workers, by local residents and by tourists travelling to recreation and camping destinations.
B.C. on the Move is government’s 10-year plan for the improvement of the province’s transportation network. Over the next three years, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest up to $2.7 billion to improve B.C.’s transportation network.
As part of this plan, the B.C. government will invest $380 million over three years to resurface provincial highways. Highway resurfacing includes conventional paving, hot-in-place recycle paving (an environmentally-friendly, made-in-B.C. technology), and sealcoating for lower volume rural highways. This investment program is the main component of the government’s strategy to resurface 1,000 km of provincial highway annually.
