One of B.C.’s most popular rest areas located along the Trans-Canada Highway near Craigellachie will undergo a series of improvements, bringing the washroom facilities and surrounding area up to a modern standard.

“This rest area is at the site of the historic ‘Last Spike’ – which signalled the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “These improvements are part of our $9-million commitment to upgrade and build new rest areas throughout the province, as identified in B.C. on the Move, the province’s 10-year transportation plan.”

“This is not only a popular rest stop for tourists and visitors alike, it is a historic site that is steeped in Canadian history,” said Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo. “It is great to see improvements be made to the washroom facilities and surrounding area, to preserve this location and allow users to enjoy this spot for years to come.”

The washrooms will be closed until mid-December in order to replace all fixtures, water tanks and repair the concrete floor. Portable toilets will be in place during this closure. Interior and exterior painting and final touches will be completed at the beginning of March, prior to the start of tourist season. The project will also include brushing of the grounds around the structure. The total cost of these improvements is approximately $70,000.
