A $20,000 age-friendly grant has been provided to the District of Wells to support its aging well in Wells community plan.
“Seniors face a diverse set of challenges as they age,” said Coralee Oakes, MLA for Cariboo North. “Through the age-friendly grant we are ensuring that programs are being developed that identify and address potential areas of care – allowing them to remain healthy and active in our community.”
An age-friendly community plan will be developed to identify the needs of older adults in the District of Wells. The plan’s engagement process will include consultations with a diverse range of community members.
“By ensuring that we champion an age-friendly community approach, between local government, local organizations, our citizens and service providers, will help ensure the District of Wells remains a vibrant, active community into the future. The District of Wells seeks to support people of all ages and abilities within our community, and in doing so provide lasting benefits for all those who live, work and recreate in Wells,” said Mayor Robin Sharpe, District of Wells.
The age-friendly communities grant program is a partnership between the Province and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM). Local governments were invited to apply for grants up to $20,000. For the 2017 grants, communities were encouraged to consider projects that focus on accessibility, aging well, physical activity and non-medical home supports. The District of Wells is one of 18 municipalities to receive a 2017 age-friendly grant.
Applications were reviewed by a committee from UBCM and the Ministry of Health. Since 2007, age-friendly communities grants have funded 286 projects throughout British Columbia, totalling $3.75 million.
