The BC Wildfire Service is preparing to conduct planned ignitions on the Woodward and Harris creeks wildfires between Aug. 28 and Aug. 31, 2018.
Residents of nearby communities are advised that smoke will be highly visible from Highway 3, Lumby and Cherryville.
These planned ignitions will burn off forest fuels between established control lines and the fire perimeters, which will help manage the spread of these wildfires. The exact timing of the planned ignitions will depend on weather and site conditions, but they could begin as early as Tuesday, Aug. 28.
These planned ignitions will be monitored closely by BC Wildfire Service crews at all times.
This mix of aerial ignitions and hand ignitions will help enhance the overall safety, efficiency and effectiveness of fire-management efforts. Aerial ignitions will involve helicopters using helitorches to produce the vigorous fire behaviour needed for the current wet conditions. Hand ignitions are performed by BC Wildfire Service firefighters using drip torches.
