People who travel on Highway 16 will soon benefit from two resurfacing projects near Prince George and McBride.
“Highway 16 experiences a high volume of commercial traffic, and is a key part of British Columbia’s trade corridor, connecting the ports in Prince Rupert and Stewart with the rest of the country,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “We have promised safer roads for the people of B.C., and this work will make a big difference to all drivers.”
The first project includes resurfacing 36 kilometres of Highway 16 between Josephine Road, west of Prince George, and Hillcrest Way, east of Vanderhoof. The resurfaced highway will increase safety and mobility on this key transportation route. Peters Brothers Construction Ltd. from Penticton has been awarded the $8.6-million contract.
The second project is resurfacing 20 kilometres of Highway 16, from West Twin Creek to Bell Mountain Road, approximately 15 kilometres northwest of McBride. This project was originally scheduled for last summer, but was delayed due to provincial wildfires. Hot-in-place recycled asphalt will be used, which makes paving projects faster, saves non-renewable paving materials and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Green Roads Recycling Ltd. from Fernie has been awarded the $2.3-million contract.
Work on both projects is scheduled to start June 2018, and be completed in the fall . While the resurfacing work is underway, drivers are advised to follow the instructions of traffic control personnel and traffic signs, and check DriveBC for updates.
In total, more than $76 million is being invested in highway, side road and bridge rehabilitation in northern B.C. in 2018. The B.C. government will continue to invest in transportation infrastructure for the safe, reliable and efficient movement of people and goods.
