Beginning on the evening of Dec. 3, 2018, drivers are advised that the Koksilah River Bridge seismic upgrade project is entering its third and final phase of construction.
During this phase, the southbound left turn from Highway 1 onto Cowichan Bay Road will remain closed. In addition, the right turn from Cowichan Bay Road heading north onto Highway 1 will be closed. These two closures will remain in effect until project completion.
A detour continues to be available via Bench Road.
Northbound drivers will still be allowed to access Cowichan Bay Road via Highway 1, subject to washout conditions that may require closures. Drivers are advised to monitor Drive BC and roadside electronic message boards for updates.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is aware that the project is taking longer than originally anticipated due to weather, rising river levels and ensuring the project meets provincial earthquake construction standards. The ministry thanks drivers, neighbours and the Cowichan Tribes for their continued patience.
Crews expect to have the project completed in early 2019.
