Backgrounders

Childcare BC New Spaces Fund creates more options for Victoria families

This backgrounder contains additional information on the six projects that will create 260 new licensed child care spaces in Victoria.

Braefoot Elementary

Sixty-five new child care spaces are being created — 16 preschool spaces and 49 school-age spaces. Two new, fully accessible ground-up modular units will be built. The Greater Victoria School District (GVSD) is partnering with the Braefoot Community Association, a non-profit society that will operate the centre.

Lampson Elementary (Les Agneaux de Saute-Mouton)

Twenty-eight new spaces are being created at an existing child care facility – eight infant/toddler spaces and 20 spaces for children aged three to five years. Les Agneaux de Saute-Mouton is the only group-licensed French daycare in Victoria and has been operating for 30 years. Garderie Saute-Mouton is the non-profit organization that operates the centre. Programming at the centre includes First Nations education awareness and, through partnerships, supports immigrant and refugee families.

Oaklands Elementary

Fifty-one new child care spaces are being created – 10 infant/toddler spaces, 16 preschool spaces and 25 school-age spaces. The GVSD has partnered with the Oaklands Community Association (OCA), a non-profit society that will be operating the centre. OCA has a partnership with Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health that provides resources helping support children with diverse abilities. OCA also supports young parents through a youth and family counsellor who will assist with specific programming, which includes nutrition and interpersonal development.

Oasis Daycare

Twenty-four new infant/toddler spaces are now open. The facility was purpose-built for accessibility, with staff trained to support children with extra support needs. Parents are invited to participate in various programs and activities at the centre on a volunteer basis. The centre also welcomes mothers who are still breastfeeding to come in throughout the day to nurse their children.

Little Wild Early Learning

Sixteen new child care spaces for children aged three to five years are now open. The centre worked with the Victoria Native Friendship Centre to develop Indigenous programming, including drumming, smudging, as well as a speech and language development program.

Maple Tree Children’s Centre

Seventy-six new child care spaces are being created – 36 infant/toddler spaces, 16 for children aged 30-months to school age, and 24 for children up to 12 years old. The centre will use a graduated system, so a child enrolling as an infant could stay for several years as they advance through the multi-age programs. The curriculum will include interactive music classes through the Victoria Conservatory of Music, as well as yoga classes from a trained instructor.

The above projects are in addition to the following six projects announced in partnership with the GVSD in November 2018:

Campus View Elementary

Fifty-three new child care spaces are being created – 12 for children aged three to five years, 16 preschool spaces and 25 school-age spaces. The GVSD and Campus View Elementary are partnering with Campus View Child Care to build the child care facility. These spaces were originally to be located at Willows Elementary school, but have been moved to Campus View Elementary.

Doncaster Elementary

Fifty-six new child care spaces are being created – 16 spaces for children aged three to five years, 16 preschool spaces and 24 spaces for school-age children. Doncaster Elementary has partnered with Doncaster Out of School Care to build two learning studios and install a divider in the gym to save 25 existing spaces that would otherwise be lost due to the classroom being used by the school.

Frank Hobbs Elementary

Eighty-five new spaces are being created – 12 for children aged three to five years, and 73 spaces for school-age children. Frank Hobbs Elementary has partnered with Goosey Gander Kindergarten Association (GGKA) to build two learning studios and put dividers in the gym to create the new spaces. GGKA offers programs for children at risk and vulnerable families by providing healthy snacks daily and clothing resources where needed. GGKA also provides services and programming in multiple languages for families new to Canada.

Macaulay Elementary

Thirty-seven new spaces are being created – 12 preschool and 25 school-age spaces. Macaulay Elementary will build a new learning studio and maintain child care space by putting dividers in the gym.

Tillicum Elementary

Ninety-one new child care spaces are being created – 16 preschool and 75 school-age spaces. Tillicum Elementary will build two learning studios and put a divider into the gym to create a total of 91 new spaces.

Vic West Elementary

Fifty-seven new child care spaces are being created – 32 for children aged three to five years and 25 for school-age children. Victoria West Elementary is partnering with Victoria West Community Association (VWCA) to build two learning studios and put dividers into the gym to create a total of 57 new spaces in a school that currently has no existing child care. The learning studios will be fully accessible and VWCA promotes an inclusive environment with support staff for children with special needs. VWCA also partners with Esquimalt Neighbourhood House for Mother Goose and Pitter Patter Kindergym programs that provide drop-in services for families.
