Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, has issued the following statement regarding the Wiggus Table with Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs related to the Coastal GasLink pipeline project:
“We and the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs made a committed effort to find a peaceful resolution to the situation. It was very clear from our discussions that all of us came together in good faith to try to find a way forward together.
“We honour and value our deepening relationship, and we are dedicated to continuing to build that relationship, including through the Wet’suwet’en process of Wiggus/Respect.
“While we were not successful in finding a resolution to the current situation, we continue to remain open to dialogue with the Wet’suwet’en leadership on this issue.
“We hope that the paramount need for safety stays the top priority for all parties.
“Our ongoing reconciliation discussions with Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs, which are focused on rights, title, self-government and self-determination, continue and we are making important progress in those discussions.”
