Point-in-time counts provide snapshot of homelessness

The results from 20 provincially funded point-in-time counts that took place between March and May 2023 have been released on BC Housing’s website.

The Province started funding these counts in 2018. Prior to 2018, some local governments in the province had been conducting independent counts since 2002.

The Province funded point-in-time counts in the following communities in 2023:

  • Sechelt and Gibsons
  • Comox Valley
  • Prince Rupert
  • Williams Lake
  • Merritt
  • Parksville and Qualicum
  • Smithers
  • Penticton
  • Fort St. John
  • Vernon
  • Quesnel
  • Squamish
  • Dawson Creek
  • Kitimat
  • Terrace
  • Port Alberni
  • Campbell River
  • Cranbrook
  • Powell River
  • Salmon Arm

Point-in-time counts are typically conducted through in-person canvassing and provide a snapshot of people who are experiencing homelessness in a 24-hour period in a specific community. They are an important tool for understanding homelessness, but are known to be undercounts.
