Facts about DTES housing
  • The Province, through BC Housing, provided approximately $12 million through the Building BC: Affordable Rental Housing fund to purchase and renovate the building.
  • An independent appraisal was completed in November 2022 and supports the purchase price.
  • Since March 2023, the Province, through BC Housing, has opened 275 new and renovated housing spaces to those living in Vancouver’s DTES.
  • Recent purchased spaces include the 60-unit project on Western Street, which opened in July 2023 and 29 units on Ash Street, which is currently accepting tenants with all but five units filled.
  • In total, the Province has opened or renovated nearly 500 spaces in the DTES since summer 2022.
  • Construction for these buildings is complete and tenant move-ins are complete or in progress.
  • This is along with the recently announced one-time grant of $11 million the Province provided to the Downtown Eastside SRO Collaborative Society to help more people living in SROs in Vancouver access improved services and supports.
