The hospital’s new name

The new hospital has been gifted a Tsimshian name, Ksyen Regional Hospital, in recognition of the territory on which the hospital was built and the region it serves.

Ksyen is the Sm’algya̱x name for the Skeena River. The word translates as “River of the Mist.” Sm’algya̱x is the language spoken by the Ts’msyen.

Ksyen Regional Hospital replaces the former Mills Memorial Hospital, which was opened in 1961 and served the community for more than 60 years.

In 1962, the hospital was named in honour of Dr. Stanley Mills. The legacy of Mills and the families that brought the first modern hospital to Terrace, will be honoured in the new facility. A memory wall has been created to educate visitors about the history of health care in the region. The ambulatory care unit is being named in honour of Mills.

Northern Health worked collaboratively with local and regional First Nations to make the hospital culturally safe and welcoming. This includes an Indigenous advisory working group, which provided input on the new facility.
