Facts about the Nanaimo navigation centre

The proposed project will be funded through the Province’s Homelessness Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) program. Funding details will be determined closer to project completion.

  • The City of Nanaimo owns the land and is proposing to lease it to BC Housing for a nominal fee.
  • The Province and the City of Nanaimo signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in January 2024 to work in partnership to implement better homelessness response actions.
    • This MOU includes the development of new shelter and housing options through the HEARTH program and providing increased supports to people currently living in encampments through the Homeless Encampment Action Response Team (HEART) program.
  • The 1030 Old Victoria Rd. property is the third temporary housing project to be announced under HEARTH.
    • The reopening of 50 spaces at Newcastle Place at 250 Terminal Ave. and 50 new transitional spaces at 1300 Old Island Highway were announced in January 2024.
  • In addition to the temporary housing under HEARTH, BC Housing is exploring the addition of permanent, purpose-built housing to the site.
    • Details will be announced once confirmed.
