Facts about Toquaht Nation, and Uchucklesaht Tribe
  • Uchucklesaht Tribe has 313 members with approximately 12 to 14 living in the village of Ehthlateese.
  • The Uchucklesaht Tribe has two villages that are situated approximately 37 kilometres down the Barkley Sound, southwest from Port Alberni.
  • The first village is immediately past the Uchucklesaht Inlet on the west side of Barkley Sound, named Cowishulth.
  • The second village is located at the head of Uchucklesaht Inlet and is named Hilthatis.
  • The Toquaht Nation and Uchucklesaht Tribe are a self-governing First Nations situated on the west coast of Vancouver Island in Barkley Sound.
  • Toquaht Nation and Uchucklesaht Tribe are signatories to the Maa-nulth First Nations Treaty, along with Canada and B.C.
  • The treaty came into effect in April 2011.
  • The majority of roads leading to remote First Nation communities are forest service roads on Crown land and are the obligation of the Province to maintain. 
  • There are more than 1,100 kilometres of forest service roads leading to First Nations communities in B.C.
