Construction has begun on the first phase of the Tribune Bay campground redevelopment, which will create a more enjoyable camping experience for people visiting Tribune Bay Park.
The formerly private campground on Hornby Island will be redesigned to provide the space, privacy and amenities people expect when camping at BC Parks sites. The upgraded campground will include a variety of accommodations, such as pull-through and back-in sites, electrified and non-electrified sites, and small, basic cabins. New pit toilets and a new accessible shower building are also part of the $6.6-million project, along with more than 5,000 new plants to improve biodiversity, privacy and stormwater management.
Currently, the campground has approximately 120 sites. To accommodate the work and increase space between sites, approximately 40 campsites will be removed from the campground and built in a different area of the park in winter 2027. Options continue to be explored for the best location.
Construction for Phase 1 is scheduled for completion in May 2026 and public engagement for Phase 2 will begin in the coming months.
BC Parks is also replacing the aging picnic shelter in the day-use area. Temporary closures of the beach trail and the outdoor education centre are expected during construction. Alternative access to the beach will remain open.
Tribune Bay Park is known for its unique rock formations, sprawling white sandy beach and warm, shallow bay. In 2021, the Province bought two properties: the last remaining beachfront property on Tribune Bay and an existing private campground. Since then, there has been extensive public outreach and consultation with First Nations about the proposed redevelopment to ensure it honours the site’s values and unique character of Hornby Island.
