Mental-health, substance-use beds around B.C.

Government is working to build a seamless system of mental-health and addictions care that works for everyone. As of April 2025, there were 24,858 publicly funded mental-health and substance-use beds for adults and youth in B.C.

Mental-health beds provide a variety of care options:

  • Community mental-health beds provide mental-health treatment in community settings outside of hospitals: 18,980 beds
  • Acute mental-health beds provide intensive specialized inpatient treatment for adults and/or youth experiencing a severe mental-health crisis: 930 beds
  • Non-forensic tertiary beds provide the highest level of care for people with severe mental-health challenges beyond what community services can offer: 952 beds
  • Forensic tertiary beds provide court-related inpatient and involuntary care, including forensic psychiatric assessment, treatment and community case management: 190 beds
  • Correctional mental-health beds provide mental-health care for patients requiring acute, crisis mental-health treatment including involuntary care, while in custody at Surrey Pretrial Services Centre: 10 beds
  • Approved homes provide long-term involuntary care in a home-like environment at Alouette Homes: 18 beds
  • Total mental-health beds: 21,080 beds

In total, there are 2,100 beds in B.C. that can offer involuntary care (this includes acute mental-health, non-forensic tertiary, forensic tertiary, correctional mental-health and approved homes).

In addition to mental-health beds, there are 3,778 substance-use beds in B.C., including 2,131 treatment and recovery beds and 1,647 substance-use housing beds. Together, these beds provide a full continuum of mental-health and substance-use care for people in B.C.

Since 2017, 7,066 new publicly funded mental-health and substance-use beds have opened, including 6,308 mental-health beds and 758 substance-use treatment and recovery beds.

Note: The categorization of bed types reflects a point-in-time count and may be subject to change as a response to the local needs of the community and clients.
