As of July 8, 2025, there is one active, contagious measles case and 10 patients have been hospitalized. In 2025, there have been 102 cases of measles reported across all five regional health authorities in B.C.
The majority of cases of measles in B.C. are in individuals who are not fully immunized.
The Province and public health recommend people check their immunization records. It is recommended that people have two doses of a measles vaccine. Anyone needing immunizations can book an appointment to get the free measles vaccine.
Measles is an extremely contagious virus that can lead to severe disease and cause complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and even death. People most at risk are those who are completely unvaccinated against the disease and who have no immunity from past exposures.
If someone is unsure of their immunization status, they should look up their file via Health Gateway, contact their health-care provider or call 811 to speak to a health-care professional. If still unsure, it is safe to have an additional dose of the measles vaccine. Officials also remind people to monitor for symptoms if they have recently travelled or have been exposed to the virus, and they should isolate if they are sick. People experiencing symptoms should call ahead before seeking health care, to ensure people’s safety.
The risk of measles infections is greater when travelling to areas where it circulates while unprotected, so it is recommended that people make sure they and their children are immunized before leaving. Children older than 12 months are considered fully immunized after two doses. Adults born in 1970 or later should ensure they have received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine, as one dose is not enough to ensure full protection.
