People with low to moderate incomes in Quesnel, including Indigenous Elders, seniors and families, will soon have access to safe, affordable housing with construction underway on 35 new rental homes.
“This project is more than just housing,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “It’s about creating a safe and culturally appropriate place for people living in Quesnel. These new rental homes will provide stability to people, helping growing families, individuals, seniors, people living with disabilities and Indigenous people find homes that meet their needs.”
The five-storey building at 319 North Fraser Dr. will include 35 studio, one- and two-bedroom homes, with some that are accessible or adaptable to meet the needs of seniors and people with mobility requirements. The building is designed to bring together Indigenous Elders, families and young adults in a vibrant, intergenerational community.
The Quesnel Tillicum Society will own and operate the new homes when they open in 2027. Since the building is located next to the society’s child care centre and friendship centre, tenants will have the opportunity to connect to a broader network of culturally grounded programs and services. In addition to safe, affordable housing, residents will benefit from access to supports for their families and opportunities to engage with the community.
“We at the Quesnel Tillicum Society are proud to work with the Province to provide affordable homes for Indigenous families,” said Tony Goulet, executive director, Quesnel Tillicum Society. “This partnership is an important part of providing our region with housing that supports culture, family and community.”
Tenant selection will be managed by the society, with priority given to Indigenous households with low to moderate incomes. The Province, through BC Housing, provided approximately $23 million toward the project.
These homes are part of a $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the Province has more than 93,600 homes delivered or underway, including more than 2,900 homes in northern B.C.
