People in Surrey will soon have access to new cardiac and radiology services at Surrey Memorial Hospital, as investments bring advanced cardiac and image-guided care closer to home.
“People living in Surrey deserve health care close to home. Not after a long wait or a long drive to another community, but right here in Surrey,” said Premier David Eby. “Expanding life-saving services is a part of our commitment to building up Surrey’s health-care system so that everyone can access the specialized care they need, when they need it.”
Providing specialized cardiac care
The new cardiac catheterization suites are the first of their kind south of the Fraser River. Patients who previously had to travel to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster or hospitals in Vancouver for cardiac procedures, such as angioplasty, diagnostic angiography and invasive coronary imaging will now be able to receive care in their own community. They will be supported by familiar providers and their local support networks. Patients with angina, heart attacks and coronary artery disease can now be diagnosed and treated at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
“These new cardiology and radiology suites at Surrey Memorial Hospital will help people in Surrey get the care they need close to home,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “The new unit is another way we are investing in infrastructure in Surrey to ensure the hospital has the technology needed to expand high-quality care, enhancing the patient experience for years to come.”
Dr. Dwayne Conway, regional co-director of interventional cardiology for Fraser Health, and department head of interventional cardiology for Surrey Memorial Hospital said: “Being able to provide interventional cardiology here in Surrey is a meaningful step forward for our patients and for the region. Timely access to this type of care can make a considerable difference to outcomes, and having it available locally will ease what has, for many years, been a real concern for patients and families. I’m grateful to the colleagues and staff whose steady commitment and hard work have brought us to this point.”
Enhancing heart and imaging care in new unit
On Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, care teams at the hospital will begin providing patients with interventional cardiology procedures in the new cardiac catheterization suites. Interventional cardiology is a minimally invasive technique that uses small instruments guided through blood vessels to diagnose and treat heart conditions without open surgery.
On Jan. 8, 2026, two new interventional radiology suites will open to increase access to minimally invasive, image-guided procedures. An existing interventional radiology suite will continue operating in its current location. Together, these five specialized suites will strengthen Surrey Memorial Hospital’s role in providing cardiac and image-guided care.
“These new suites represent an important step forward for patients and families in Surrey,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “By bringing advanced heart and image-guided care closer to home, we’re helping people get the treatment they need sooner, in the comfort of their own community. This investment strengthens care today and builds a healthier future for everyone in Surrey.”
Interventional radiology procedures use advanced imaging, such as CT, MRI, ultrasound and X-ray, to guide targeted treatments for complex conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, without the need for traditional open surgery. These procedures often lead to shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and a faster recovery, helping patients get back to their lives sooner, while reducing strain on the health-care system.
Together, these five specialized suites will strengthen Surrey Memorial Hospital as a key centre for cardiac and image-guided care in the region. Placing the interventional cardiology and interventional radiology in one unit will improve workflow, optimize space and create a safer, better co-ordinated environment for patients, staff and medical staff.
Investing in healthy communities
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $97 million, funded in part by $6 million in donations from Surrey Hospitals Foundation, with the balance of funding from the Province. The foundation’s overall fundraising goal for the project is $10 million.
Since 2017, the Province has invested more than $3 billion in Surrey health care capital projects. Some of the projects include:
- nearly $3 billion for the new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre
- $85 million for the new renal hemodialysis building at Surrey Memorial Hospital
- $24 million for the Surrey Memorial Hospital MRI Expansion
The Province has provided $29 billion since 2017 to upgrade and build new hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and cancer centres to support people in British Columbia. This project at Surrey Memorial Hospital is part of the Province’s broader commitment to strengthen the health-care system and ensure people in the Lower Mainland and beyond have access to care.
