What to know about flood-mitigation initiatives
  • The funding aligns with the Emergency and Disaster Management Act and supports the four phases of emergency management in B.C.: mitigation, preparation, response and recovery.
  • The Sumas River Watershed Flood Mitigation Planning Initiative was signed in April 2023 in response to widespread flooding on Sumas Prairie resulting from heavy rainfall in November 2021.
  • The international Transboundary Flood Initiative was signed in October 2023 to address flood risks and habitat restoration in the Nooksack River and Sumas River watersheds in B.C. and Washington state.
    • The two agreements are separate, but they share the same goals to make the region more resilient to flooding events while restoring and protecting ecosystems.
  • The Province has been increasing B.C.’s preparedness and mitigation efforts because of the warnings from experts about increasingly frequent and severe flood hazards due to climate change.
    • It includes more than $410 million in provincial funding for approximately 600 flood-risk-reduction projects since 2017 with First Nations and local governments through the ministry’s Community Emergency Preparedness Fund and Disaster Resilience and Innovation Fund.
