Kelly Greene, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, has released the following statement to mark Search and Rescue Volunteer Memorial Day:
“Search and Rescue Volunteer Memorial Day is an opportunity to honour the dedication, service and sacrifice of search and rescue volunteers throughout British Columbia.
“Whether on the ground, in the air or on the water, search and rescue volunteers from the BC Search and Rescue Association, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (PEP Air) are there when it matters the most. They step forward without hesitation, often in difficult terrain and challenging weather, to help others.
“It is demanding work that requires compassion, courage and passion. Volunteers dedicate countless hours to training and preparedness, supported by families and loved ones who stand behind them every step of the way.
“Since 1967, while serving people in British Columbia, 17 search and rescue volunteers have lost their lives. Their loss is felt by their loved ones, teammates and communities throughout the province. Their legacy lives on in every call answered, every life saved and every volunteer who continues this work with the same sense of care and commitment.
“Today, on Search and Rescue Volunteer Memorial Day, we pause to honour their sacrifice and extend our gratitude to the volunteers and families who serve with strength and unwavering dedication.”
