Seniors in Langley City have access to 101 new and affordable homes with the opening of The Maple, a new housing development for independent seniors.
“Seniors have helped shape our communities and it is important that they have continued access to safe and affordable housing,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “The Maple is essential because it is close to the services people rely on. It is helping more seniors stay independent and connected in their community while easing housing pressures in Langley.”
The Maple is an eight‑storey building at 5460 203rd St. in the heart of Langley City. The development is within a 10‑minute walk of downtown services and amenities, including shops, health services and the future Langley City Centre SkyTrain station.
This building replaces the Birch, a 66-unit apartment building previously on the site that was destroyed by a fire in 2017.
Homes designed with seniors in mind
The Maple is located on the Langley Lions Housing Society’s campus of six buildings, all housing seniors or people with disabilities. The new building includes its own indoor lounge, outdoor patio and garden plots, providing welcoming spaces for social connection and outdoor enjoyment.
“I love this building, it’s got everything I need,” said Glenda Fraser, a tenant at The Maple. “I love the view, the windows bring in so much light. It’s a very welcoming place, and I’m so happy to call it home.”
The building was designed with the needs of seniors in mind. All apartments are one-bedroom units with adaptable features, including fully accessible bathrooms. The features help ensure residents can live comfortably and safely in their homes as their needs change over time.
“As people age, having safe, accessible housing close to services becomes increasingly important,” said Susie Chant, parliamentary secretary for seniors’ services and long-term care. “The Maple supports seniors by providing homes that accommodate aging in place with dignity and long-term comfort. Projects like this help ensure seniors can remain in the community they call home.”
The building is operated by Langley Lions Housing Society, the largest provider of low-cost housing for seniors and persons with disabilities in Langley that has been serving seniors in the community for more than 50 years.
The project is part of a $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the Province has more than 95,000 homes delivered or underway, including nearly 1,600 homes in Langley.
