__________
More children and families throughout B.C. will have opportunities to learn, participate and succeed through increased access to programs and resources that help build literacy skills and a love of reading.
"Reading helps children build confidence and skills that support them throughout their lives," said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “As a parent, I’ve seen how a book can capture a child’s imagination and keep them coming back for the next one. Access to literacy programs and reading resources helps more children discover the joy of reading, supports lifelong learning and creates opportunities to explore and celebrate B.C. books, authors and stories.”
Government is providing $500,000 to the 2026 Raise-a-Reader campaign, which supports programs that connect children and families throughout B.C. with books, reading materials and opportunities to learn together.
Raising awareness and support for literacy
This year’s Raise-a-Reader campaign runs from Sept. 18-25 during Literacy Month in B.C. Organized by Postmedia and delivered in partnership with Decoda Literacy Solutions, the campaign raises awareness and funds for programs throughout B.C. that support young readers and families. Donations help strengthen family-based reading programs and support community initiatives that encourage reading and lifelong learning.
Since 2017, the Province has contributed $5 million to the campaign.
“Literacy changes lives and early support can change a child’s future,” said Maureen Kehler, executive director, Decoda Literacy Solutions. “When we help children build strong literacy skills from the start, we strengthen families, open doors to opportunity and build stronger communities. Decoda Literacy Solutions is grateful to the B.C. government and other partners for investing in literacy and helping make lasting change possible across the province.”
Creating opportunity through reading and learning
Raise-a-Reader funding helps create opportunities for people of all ages to learn new skills for everyday life and explore new possibilities.
- Books and reading materials supported through literacy programs help connect readers with diverse stories and perspectives, while contributing to a stronger literary sector that includes B.C. authors, publishers and booksellers.
- Literacy helps people succeed at school and work, make informed decisions and navigate everyday life with confidence.
- Reading together sparks curiosity and creativity, while helping children and caregivers build strong relationships through shared learning experiences.
"Fostering a love of reading and literacy for children and families is key for lifelong learning, empathy and exploration,” said Sarah Felker, executive director, Association of Book Publishers of BC (Books BC). “Books BC is grateful for the Province’s continued support of Raise-a-Reader, helping literacy programs remain accessible to all British Columbians. Connecting more readers with books helps strengthen B.C. authors, publishers and booksellers at a time when many British Columbians are looking for ways to support local creators and businesses.”
Through investments in literacy, libraries and community learning initiatives, B.C. is helping more people access the tools they need to reach their goals and thrive in life.
