A new 500-seat addition is coming to the Grandview Heights neighbourhood in Surrey to support secondary students and families.
“Surrey is one of the fastest-growing communities in the province and investments like this make sure Surrey students have the space they need to grow, too,” said Garry Begg, parliamentary secretary for Surrey infrastructure. “We are making sure families in Surrey have access to the stable, long‑term learning spaces they count on, so students can stay connected to their neighbourhoods and learn close to home.”
Investing in Surrey schools
To address enrolment growth in Surrey, this new addition will give more secondary students the opportunity to learn close to home.
The addition will include new classrooms, science labs and specialty learning spaces, giving students more opportunities to select electives such as technology, home economics and fine arts. The Province is providing as much as $35 million for the addition.
“Expanding school infrastructure in Surrey is about more than adding classrooms – it’s about building the long‑term capacity a growing city needs,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “This addition at Grandview Heights Secondary will strengthen the foundation for future students by investing in modern, efficient spaces that will serve the community for decades.”
Features of the addition
The new three-storey addition will include:
- special-education spaces to support students with diverse needs
- nine specialty learning spaces for electives, including science, technology, home economics and fine arts
- 12 general-instruction classrooms
- the addition will be built to LEED Gold standards and is designed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by as much as 73% and increase energy efficiency
“Surrey Schools trustees were proud to stand with the Ministry of Education and Child Care in 2022 to officially open Grandview Heights, the first new secondary school in south Surrey in nearly 30 years at the time,” said Gary Tymoschuk, chair of the Surrey Board of Education. “Just four years later, enrolment has nearly doubled, underscoring the urgent need for space. We’re excited to move forward with this critical expansion to support our community.”
Construction on this new addition is anticipated to start in summer 2027 and it is set to open for students in fall 2029.
